Screwing, hammering, tinkering–and enriching the lives of animals at the same time! That’s what the new series “DIY for Animals” by myHOMEBOOK and PETBOOK is all about. In the first episode, we build a bird feeder.

If you enjoy watching birds up close and want to do something good for them, you should get a bird feeder. Equipped with food, it will attract birds on its own. We show you how to easily build such a bird feeder together with Susanne from “ikarusdoodle.” At the top of the video, there is a step-by-step guide for a bird feeder made from sticks. Have fun building it!

Bird Feeder–What You Need

Depending on how you want the bird feeder to look, you’ll need the appropriate sticks. We chose birch sticks. For the project, you need:

Material

  • Bird food
  • Sticks

Build Your Own Bird Feeder–The Instructions

Before starting the project, you should cut the sticks to the appropriate size. This way, you won’t be held up during the other steps. Here’s how it goes:

  1. First, build two frames for the basic structure of the bird feeder. You’ll need a total of eight sticks for this.
  2. Pre-drill and then screw everything together, placing additional sticks side by side as a kind of floor on the lower level.
  3. In the next step, select shorter sticks for the four corner posts. Screw these to the frames as well. Now the basic structure is complete.
  4. Next, it’s time for the roof. You’ll need five sticks for this. Screw two together for each gable and place a brace between them. Then attach the roof to the basic structure.
  5. Finally, screw many sticks at a 90-degree angle and place them on the roof brace, then secure them.
