A scratching post provides cats with entertainment, allows them to sharpen their claws–and when combined with a cave or a platform, it also serves as a sleeping spot. However, scratching posts aren’t always visually appealing. They’re large and don’t necessarily blend in with the rest of the decor. But you can easily build a cat scratching post yourself using just three materials–and design it to your liking. We’ll show you how to do it together with Susanne from “ikarusdoodle”. Cat Scratching Post–What You Need
Depending on how large and detailed the scratching post should be, you’ll need more materials. For our DIY, however, you only need three:
Materials
- Wooden crate (such as an old fruit crate)
- Sisal rope
- Wooden log (such as a birch log)
Tools
- Drill
- Nails
- Hammer
- Screws
- Pencil
- Cordless screwdriver
- Jigsaw
Build Your Own Cat Scratching Post–Here’s How
Since you only need three materials for the DIY scratching post, the assembly doesn’t take too long. Here’s how:
- The wooden crate serves not only as the base for the scratching post but also as a shelter for the cat. Therefore, you must first measure and cut out an entrance. The size depends on the size of the cat.
- Next, pre-drill holes in the wooden crate where the log will later be attached. These holes also help set the markings at the correct spot on the log, as it will be pre-drilled there too.
- Then, connect the log to the wooden crate using three long screws.
- Finally, fix the sisal rope to the log with a nail and wrap it around the log lengthwise, ensuring no gaps. Secure the end with another nail–done!
