Whether as a gift or for your own garden, stepping stones in flower beds are always a good idea. They’re practical because you don’t have to step directly into the bed to reach a specific plant, and they’re customizable decorative elements. myHOMEBOOK gardening expert Franka Kruse-Gering explains how to make creative stepping stones with just a few ingredients.
What You Need for Stepping Stones
If you want to make stepping stones, you don’t need much.
- One kilogram of concrete (quick-setting concrete is not suitable as it hardens too quickly).
- Bucket
- 100 milliliters of water
- Something to stir with
- Mold (a flower pot saucer is a good option)
- Small stones for decoration
How to Easily Make Stepping Stones
In the first step, water and concrete must be mixed. The water should be added gradually to avoid diluting the concrete. Note that the mixture will appear quite thick and coarse, but it will settle in the mold. The concrete is then poured into the mold. You should gently shake and tap the filled mold for a moment to allow the concrete to settle and eliminate any bubbles.

Now comes the fun part, as you can decorate to your heart’s content. The possibilities are nearly endless. However, keep in mind that you might walk barefoot over the stepping stones later, so it’s best to avoid three-dimensional decorative elements. Mosaic stones, bottle caps, or rounded stones work well.
When decorating, also ensure that you press the elements slightly into the concrete so they stay secure. After about two days of drying time, the new stepping stone should easily come out of the mold. It can now be placed in the bed or given as a gift.
