A raised bed is perfect for growing vegetables such as beets, zucchini, and many other varieties. In the video above, we demonstrate how you can easily build one yourself using pallets.
Harvesting vegetables without annoying bending and back pain–a raised bed makes this wish a reality. It’s built high enough that no strenuous bending is necessary. Due to the elevated position, raised beds are also less susceptible to weeds and pests. Additionally, they allow for a longer harvest season. Self-made raised beds from pallets have become particularly popular. myHOMEBOOK explains what you need for this and what to watch out for.
What You Need for a Raised Bed from Pallets
If you want to build a raised bed from pallets, you’ll need a bit of space in the garden. Additionally, the following materials and tools are required:
- 4 pallets
- Rabbit wire
- Plastic sheeting
- Stones
- Cordless screwdriver
- Stapler
- Screws
- Brackets
- Level (optional)
You’ll also need enough material to fill the pallet raised bed. You start with coarse materials and move to finer ones. The individual layers are composed as follows:
- Layer: About one-third of the raised bed is filled with branches or old wood.
- Layer: The second layer consists of green cuttings, sod, or mowed grass.
- Layer: Finally, compost soil is added to the pallet raised bed. You can also add regular potting soil.

Step-by-Step Guide for a Raised Bed from Pallets
Building a raised bed from pallets doesn’t require much experience–but you should definitely work in pairs. It goes faster, and the beginning is much easier. Here’s how it works:
- In the first step, arrange the pallets as they will form the raised bed. Then screw them together. We used brackets for support. Attach three brackets per corner with two screws each.
- Next, arrange the stones and place the raised bed in its future location for a test fit. This way, you can see if it’s level or needs adjustment. Soil or sod can be used to level it by placing them under the stones. It’s important that the raised bed is somewhat level so water doesn’t accumulate in one corner.
- If the raised bed is made from pallets, cut the plastic sheeting to the appropriate size. This protects against moisture. Then staple it to the pallets.
- Next, attach the rabbit wire. This protects against unwanted guests like voles. Wear gloves when cutting it, as it’s very sharp-edged. To prevent intruders from entering the sides, let the rabbit wire extend a bit. Staple it again.
- Then it’s time to fill the raised bed–layer by layer, as explained above.
- Finally, plant the raised bed and water it thoroughly–done!
