Some gardens are very large and offer plenty of space for planting. However, few people are eager to poke a hole in the ground for every seed. There is a tool that makes sowing much easier.
Some gardening tools are truly necessary. These include, for example, a shovel, a weed puller, or hedge shears. Other gardening tools could be considered a luxury, as they aren’t strictly needed but make the work easier. This includes a sowing aid. myHOMEBOOK editor Franka Kruse-Gering shows how you can easily build a sowing aid yourself.
Why do you need a sowing aid?
If you plan to plant more than three beans, it can be useful to use a sowing aid. Most people probably don’t want to poke a hole in the ground with their finger for every seed they sow. Additionally, it helps maintain the spacing between individual plants.

What you need:
Not many items are needed for the sowing aid:
- a wooden slat or board, about 50 centimeters long
- several corks–the more corks, the more holes you have in the end to sow seeds
- a pen for possible markings
- a hot glue gun

How to build a sowing aid
- It’s best to place the corks on the slat beforehand to get a feel for the spacing. It is advisable to mark the spots on the slat.
- In the next step, glue the corks onto the wooden slat. It is advisable to ensure an even distance between the corks.
- Once all the corks are glued, you should wait until everything is dry and firm.
How to use the sowing aid
Using the homemade sowing aid is very easy. Smooth the soil where you want to plant your seeds and press the slat into the ground with some force. The corks face downward and leave an indentation in the soil.
