Anyone who enjoys working with fabrics knows that there are always some scraps left over. But they don’t have to be thrown away–dog owners can make a tug toy out of them. We’ll show you how in the new episode of “DIY for Pets” from myHOMEBOOK and PETBOOK.

Unlike “normal” fabric toys for dogs, the so-called Zergel strengthens the bond between humans and dogs. The tug toy is available in various shapes, colors, and sizes in specialty stores–but you can also easily make it yourself from fabric scraps. We’ll show you the best way to do this with Susanne from “ikarusdoodle”. There’s a step-by-step guide in the video above.

What You Need for a Dog Tug Toy

To ensure the dog tug toy has a long lifespan, you should not choose material that is too thin. Our Zergel is made of cotton, which is durable yet soft. Here’s what you need:

Materials

  • Fabric scraps

Tools

  • Fabric scissors
  • Closure clip

How to Make a Dog Tug Toy Yourself

Making a dog tug toy yourself is not that difficult. Basically, you just need to know how to braid. It works just like braiding hair with three strands–but you can also vary and use more strands. This will make the Zergel thicker. Here’s how it works:

  1. First, cut three long fabric strips about ten centimeters wide.
  2. Then, lay these strips neatly on top of each other and attach the closure clip about 30 centimeters from the end.
  3. The longer ends of the strips are now braided–the remaining 30 centimeters are not braided.
  4. Once you have braided the desired length, remove the closure clip and connect both ends of the fabric scraps by combining one fabric strip from each end and continuing to braid them as a strand.
  5. Continue braiding with the three new strands until you reach the desired length.
  6. Finally, tie the ends tightly and cut off any excess fabric.

You’ll find a detailed step-by-step guide in the video above!
