Mistletoe and Christmas–where does the tradition come from?
The mistletoe was considered sacred by the Celts: the mistletoe, this magical plant that doesn’t grow from the ground like others, but rather without soil on trees, and even in the cold season produces silver berries. Celtic druids collected mistletoe and made remedies from it. They used the berries to make glue.

Why do people kiss under the mistletoe?
Traditionally, the mistletoe is seen as a symbol of luck and peace. That’s why the custom of hanging mistletoe over the door and kissing underneath it is still practiced during Christmas time. The fruits of the mistletoe are also called “kiss balls.” It is said to bring luck to newly in love couples if they kiss under the mistletoe.
Where can you find mistletoe in nature?
Mistletoe is especially visible in winter–with its round shape high up in the trees. It lives as a semi-parasite, extracting water and nutrients from its host, the tree, with its haustoria. Apple trees, in particular, are often affected in orchards and must be properly maintained to avoid dying. Mistletoe spreads through birds, as they nibble on the sticky berries. The seeds are then spread over long distances through their droppings.

Note: Mistletoe can live for a very long time. The sick benefit from its healing powers. Its branches are tough, require no care, and can serve as Christmas decorations both indoors and outdoors for a long time.
