In summer, there are always periods that are unbearably hot and dry. Despite the summer weather, you still need to take care of your lawn. myHOMEBOOK consulted Dr. Harald Nonn, chairman of the German Lawn Society.

Thirty degrees Celsius and humid weather. Even the lawn in the garden suffers under typical summer conditions. Simply letting it grow is not an option; you need to take care of the lawn. However, there are a few points to consider in hot and dry weather.

What to Consider When Mowing the Lawn in Heat

German precision is often evident in lawn care. Lush green, neatly trimmed—often just perfect. Even when the weather is at its best, with temperatures around 30 degrees, the lawn is mowed. One aspect is particularly important when mowing in the heat, explains Dr. Harald Nonn from the German Lawn Society: “When temperatures rise, you can safely increase the cutting height by a centimeter,” the expert explains. From the usual three and a half centimeters, you can go up to four and a half or even five centimeters.

The change in cutting height has a specific reason, reveals Dr. Nonn: “The grasses then shade each other a bit more, and you save some water. Because we have more leaf mass, the grasses are able to form more roots, as the energy supply is greater. This strengthens the lawn, especially in the hot summer months.”

But it’s not just the cutting height that needs attention; the right weather conditions should also be awaited, explains the professional: “Every mowing injures the leaves, and a lot of water evaporates from this wound, which can quickly lead to a brown surface.” The expert has a tip: “You should mow preferably on shady days and not necessarily in the midday heat. Better in the early evening or early morning.”
