After winter, it’s important to nourish the lawn with nutrients. myHOMEBOOK explains which fertilizer is suitable for the lawn in your garden in spring.
The dropping temperatures not only signal that spring is approaching but also that it’s time for hobby gardeners to get active in their gardens again. At the heart of every garden is a lush green lawn. A key maintenance task is fertilizing the lawn in spring. The choice of fertilizer depends on the soil type and weather conditions.
When Is the Right Time to Apply Spring Fertilizer to the Lawn?
In general, spring fertilizer should only be applied to the lawn when no severe late frosts are expected. This means the longer winter lasts, the later the first fertilization should occur. Additionally, fertilize the lawn only when heavy rainfall is not imminent, as the fertilizer would be washed away immediately.

Light, clay soils have limited nutrient reserves and therefore need replenishment relatively early with spring fertilizer. It’s recommended to fertilize for the first time in March or April to stimulate lawn growth.
Heavy soils, on the other hand, have more reserves for sprouting. Thus, it’s sufficient to fertilize them at the end of May or even early June.

Which Fertilizer Is Right for the Lawn in Spring?
“There are special spring fertilizers available for lawns,” explains Dr. Haral Nonn from the German Lawn Society in response to myHOMEBOOK’s inquiry. “These are typically nitrogen-rich fertilizers that quickly provide nitrogen to the grass.”
Hobby gardeners often opt for mineral fertilizers because they act faster. Alternatively, an organic long-term fertilizer is recommended, which can release its nutrients into the soil over a longer period. Regular use of this type of fertilizer improves soil quality, ensuring optimal lawn nourishment. Additionally, organic fertilizers are safe for both the soil and insects.
