When going on vacation, not everyone has someone to take care of their plants. But after years of care, it would be a shame if they dried out during this time. myHOMEBOOK gardening expert Franka Kruse-Gering shows a simple trick in a video that ensures you don’t have to worry about watering your plants while on vacation.

What You Need
If you want to put the plant watering trick into practice, you only need a few materials:
- An absorbent cloth
- Scissors
- A bucket or bowl
- Water

Step-by-Step Instructions
- First, cut the absorbent cloth into several narrow strips using the scissors. These should then be tied together to form one long strip.
- Next, go to the plant you want to water during your vacation and dig a hole near the root. This hole should be deep enough and ideally reach the root.
- Once this is done, fill the bucket with water and place it slightly elevated next to the plant to be watered. Hang one end of the cloth into the water in the bucket, and place the other end near the exposed root and bury it.
- The cloth absorbs water and transports it from top to bottom directly to the plant’s root. Since this process happens very slowly, you don’t have to worry about overwatering the plant during your vacation.

A myHOMEBOOK survey in 2023 found that around 50 percent of the 25,000 survey participants ask neighbors or acquaintances to take care of their plants. Nearly a quarter of respondents, exactly 12 percent, already use watering systems like the one previously presented. And still, six percent let their plants dry out and simply buy new ones after vacation.
