Many people consider their morning coffee a true elixir of life. But the popular hot beverage has more to offer–specifically, the coffee grounds. These prove to be an astonishingly versatile home remedy and are far too valuable to simply end up in the trash.

After brewing coffee, the grounds often go straight into the trash in many households. Yet, they can still be put to good use–what many see as a waste product is actually a versatile home remedy. In the video, we show five creative ways to use coffee grounds in everyday life.

1. Plant Fertilizer

When you pour the slightly acidic coffee grounds directly into the watering can or sprinkle them on plants, some plants can really thrive, especially those that prefer slightly acidic humus soil, such as blueberries or rhododendrons. However, it’s not a miracle cure. If the grounds are still warm and moist, mold can quickly develop. Therefore, always wait until the coffee grounds have cooled and dried before using them in the garden for the lawn or for houseplants.

However, coffee grounds should not be used for all plants, as there are some that do not tolerate coffee at all.

2. Skin Exfoliant

Coffee grounds are not only a great home remedy but also excellent for body care. They can replace shower gels or soap. Simply apply as an exfoliant on hands, face, or the entire body–afterward, the skin is smooth and soft. Plus, coffee grounds also stimulate blood circulation. Our colleagues at STYLEBOOK explain in detail in this article how to make exfoliant from coffee grounds.

4. For Wood Care

Coffee grounds also remove small scratches on wooden surfaces. Simply rub the powder with a damp sponge on the affected area, and the scratches will be filled. The coffee oil ideally seals the spot, making it invisible.

5. For a Fresh Scent

If shoes smell unpleasant, coffee grounds can be used to neutralize the odor. Just place the dried powder in the shoes overnight, then shake it out the next morning, and the sweat smell will be gone.
