“You eat with your eyes” is often said in the kitchen – and that also applies to desserts, of course. You can decorate them particularly well. However, chocolate is not only suitable for decoration; it can also be used in practical ways and make bowls and plates superfluous!

When it tastes good, you sometimes want to eat the whole plate. This is possible with chocolate shells – all you need for this life hack is a balloon and chocolate. Hobby baker and blogger Tamara Staab from Maras Wunderland has tried it out in the myHOMEBOOK kitchen.

Instructions for the Balloon Trick

To make chocolate shells for dessert, all you need is chocolate, balloons, and some baking paper. Melt the chocolate and place small blobs on the baking paper. These will serve as a holder for the balloons. Next, blow up the balloons – the size depends on how big you want the bowls to be in the end. Then, twist the balloon in the liquid chocolate and place it on the paper. Once the chocolate has set, the balloon can be popped. The dessert bowls are ready to eat.

Balloons can not only be used to make small bowls – they can also be used to make hoods. It’s the same principle: let the chocolate set on the balloon and then pierce it. However, the chocolate bowl is then not filled but placed over the dessert. Then pour a warm sauce over it – done.

What Do You Put in the Chocolate Shell?

What goes into the chocolate bowls once the balloon has burst is, of course, a matter of taste. However, desserts such as chocolate mousse, ice cream, or other creams are particularly suitable. It’s best to choose something that goes with the chocolate – after all, the bowl is meant to be eaten at the end. Try seasonal fruit, caramel, vanilla, or a warm filling so that the chocolate melts while you eat.
