Sweaters, jackets, shirts, dresses, shoes, bags… The list of items that belong in a closet seems endless. It’s easy to lose track and let the organization of the closet get out of hand. However, there are wonderfully simple and cost-effective ways to finally create sustainable order in your closet.

1. Review the Contents
Who doesn’t know it: The search for a specific item is unsuccessful because the chaos in the closet is just too overwhelming! To solve this problem, it’s essential to first get an overview of the entire closet contents. All clothing should be carefully reviewed and tried on in daylight. Anything that no longer fits or is no longer liked should be donated, given to friends and family, or sold at flea markets and online. It may be a bit time-consuming, but in the end, the effort will be worth it.
2. Achieve More Closet Order with Marie Kondo
“I recommend parting with objects that don’t make you happy and being grateful for those that do.”
Marie Kondo, Organization Expert and Bestselling Author
The trend of being content with fewer possessions has increasingly spread in society in recent years. Inspired by this, Japanese consultant and author Marie Kondo developed an organization system that spread like wildfire. With her legendary tips for a well-organized closet, she quickly gained worldwide fame. The “KonMari” method, named after her, is ideal for getting your closet in order, as the first step is to part with unwanted items. In the second step, everything that is to remain is sorted into categories. This creates a clear system that only needs to be maintained from then on.

3. Roll Clothes Instead of Folding
Especially in small closets, there is often not enough space to hang all clothes neatly or stack them in compartments. In this case, a somewhat unusual method, previously used mainly for suitcase travel, is suitable: Simply rolling the clothes instead of folding them saves a lot of space, and everything is still neatly stored. This method works surprisingly well, especially for pants, T-shirts, tops, and thin sweaters.

4. A Clothing Rack Relieves
Nowadays, every furniture store offers clothing racks in various designs that are easy to assemble and don’t strain the budget. They are ideal for relieving an overfilled closet—provided there is enough space in the room. Whether shirts, dresses, or jackets, you can hang the most beautiful pieces here. This way, favorite items are stored neatly, and a cool ambiance is created in the room at the same time.

5. Eliminate Drawer Chaos
Drawers are often the messiest areas of the closet. Clever box systems provide an easy solution here, as they keep the drawer contents where they belong. Whether it’s laundry, socks, or neatly folded tights—if each category gets its own box, order is guaranteed. The practical boxes are available online and in most furniture stores for around five euros—a small investment with a big impact.
6. Properly Store Scarves, Belts, and More
Accessories like scarves, belts, or ties often end up in a compartment, creating a messy impression when looking into the closet. Fortunately, there is a great solution to stylishly store these decorative pieces: With special multifunctional hangers, scarves and more can be hung efficiently on the clothing rack or closet door. Alternatively, they can also be laid side by side over a hanger.

7. Hang Shoes and Bags
Most women own about 20 pairs of shoes, while men have “only” about 10 pairs. These, of course, need to be stored somewhere. If you don’t have a separate shoe cabinet, you can use hanging storage compartments. Shoes or bags are well-kept in the individual compartments and don’t take up space in the closet. The practical hanging shelves can be attached, for example, to the outside of the closet or the back of the door. This keeps the closet neat, and all shoes are always within reach.
8. Think Seasonally for More Closet Order
Thick winter sweaters only take up space in the summer, and airy summer dresses are an unnecessary burden in the closet during winter. Therefore, it makes sense to reorganize the closet every six months and pack away everything that doesn’t fit the current season. The storage space under the bed is perfect for storing wool sweaters, thick socks, and down jackets in the summer and shorts, tops, and sandals in the winter. In practical storage bags or boxes, the clothes are protected from dust and wait there for the next season.
