Typical Features of Espadrilles
The original espadrilles are slip-on shoes made of linen or cotton without fasteners. The sole made of woven natural materials is the characteristic feature of these shoes. Due to the breathable and absorbent materials, they are very airy but also sensitive to moisture. Newer models are often equipped with an additional rubber sole. Because of the coarse nature of the natural materials, the rubber sole tends to come loose or tear over time. Today, shoes with the typical espadrille sole are available in almost all variations: with wedges, as flat sandals, or as airy mules.

Waterproofing Espadrilles
Espadrilles, like other shoes, can be waterproofed with a spray. Since shoes with a jute sole are particularly sensitive to water, you should treat them with a waterproofing spray right after purchase. This application can be repeated over time. To keep the soles clean from the inside, an insole is recommended. This protects against sweat and odors.
Can Espadrilles Be Washed in the Washing Machine?
Due to their nature, espadrilles are not suitable for the washing machine, as they are very sensitive to moisture. The natural soles can swell, deform when drying, and the glue might come loose. The same goes for the dryer. It’s best to always let your espadrilles air dry. To prevent the shoes from deforming during the drying process, you can fill them with newspaper.
Cleaning Espadrilles – The Jute Sole
To clean the natural sole, you should use only cold water and a mild cleaning agent, to which you can add white vinegar if needed. Use a shoe brush to work on the sole, making sure to rub in only one direction to prevent the natural sole from fraying. A toothbrush can be used to clean corners and edges more precisely. Simply wipe off soap residue with a clean, damp cotton cloth and let it air dry. The rubber soles of espadrilles can be cleaned with a dirt eraser or also with the shoe brush and water.
Cleaning Espadrilles – The Shoe Surface
Espadrilles come in many different upper materials, such as suede, synthetic, or smooth leather, linen, or other cotton materials. Each upper material requires different care and cleaning. Coarse dirt on smooth leather can simply be wiped off with a soft cloth and then treated with a special leather care product. Suede is cleaned with a special suede brush and an eraser. To clean canvas materials, mix water with a mild detergent and rub the upper material with an old toothbrush or a clean shoe brush. Work with more or less pressure depending on the dirt and then let it air dry.
