Among exotic tropical fruits, the mango is particularly popular. However, many people find cutting it challenging because of the large pit inside. But there are tricks to easily access the flesh.
When ripe, the mango is especially juicy and sweet. However, before you can enjoy the delicious flesh, you must first remove it from the peel and pit. This is not so easy, but there are a few methods that make it easier. In the video above, we show how to cut mangos easily.
The Mango Hedgehog
The mango hedgehog can be beautifully presented, and the flesh can be eaten immediately. All you need is a sharp knife. Use it to cut the mango flesh along the pit.
Then, carve longitudinal and crosswise lines into the mango half to create a checkered pattern. Important: Do not cut too deeply into the mango; the peel should not be damaged. Afterward, you can simply turn the half inside out. If the mango is particularly ripe, a few pieces will fall off. Otherwise, you can easily scoop out the flesh with a fork.

The Glass Trick
The glass trick is only suitable for a very ripe mango—otherwise, the glass could break. For this method, cut a half close to the pit, as with the mango hedgehog. Then, take a thin-walled glass, place the mango on the rim, and slide the peel over the glass. The flesh will then slide into the glass and can be eaten.

Peeling Mangos
You can also peel mangos—similar to carrots, cucumbers, or apples. A peeler is suitable, but you can also use a regular knife. And then you start peeling! Once the peel is completely removed, you still need to separate the flesh from the pit. Be careful: The flesh is juicy, and it’s easy to slip with the knife when cutting the mango.

How to Tell if a Mango is Ripe
Like most fruits, mangos taste best when they are ripe. You can tell by gently pressing the peel with your finger. If it gives slightly, the mango is ripe. This can also be the case even if the fruit is still green on the outside.
Tip: If the mango is not yet ripe, give it a few more days to ripen. Place the fruit near a window or another sunny spot.
