If you prefer using natural home remedies for cleaning, you can also make your own toilet tabs. myHOMEBOOK editor Katharina Regenthal shows in the video series “Easy Home” what you need for this.

Some cleaning agents are real chemical powerhouses. That’s why many people are now turning to environmentally friendly alternatives. These can be easily made at home. This includes toilet tabs, which can tackle even stubborn dirt. The homemade version foams when it comes into contact with water. You can read here how to make toilet tabs yourself.

What You Need for Homemade Toilet Tabs

To make toilet tabs yourself, you don’t need much. You probably already have some of the ingredients in your pantry.

  • 300 grams of baking soda
  • 90 grams of citric acid powder
  • Essential oil
  • Silicone mold, ice cube tray
  • Spoon
  • Water in a spray bottle

Important: If you want to make toilet tabs yourself, be sure to wear gloves to prevent the citric acid powder from coming into contact with your skin.

Here’s How It’s Done

You don’t need any special skills to make homemade toilet tabs–it’s child’s play.

  1. In the first step, mix the baking soda with the citric acid powder in a bowl.
  2. Then add about 30 drops of an essential oil. You can choose the scent you like best.
  3. Mix everything well with a spoon and then spray with water. Do this until the mixture feels like wet sand. You can also press a spoon into the powder as a test–if it leaves an impression, the consistency is just right.
  4. Next, put the mixture into the silicone mold. If you don’t have one on hand, you can also form small balls and place them on baking paper. Don’t be surprised: It will foam a little as you put the powder into the mold.
  5. Finally, let everything dry overnight–and then you can put the toilet tabs directly into the toilet.
