When the Oktoberfest season is over, all that’s left is the stubborn hangover, the anticipation for next year, and: the slightly to heavily soiled dirndl. To ensure it serves you well next year, it must be washed properly.
As always, the dirndl in all its variations is the most prominent attire for women at Germany’s largest folk festival. And because it is worn so persistently, it has experienced a lot. Dance sweat, beer, and cigarette smoke must be washed out promptly so the dirndl can rest for the next 12 months until it’s needed again.
Washing the Dirndl: Take it to the Dry Cleaner
The simplest and most straightforward way is to take it to the dry cleaner. This is especially worthwhile if it’s a designer piece or made of very high-quality and delicate fabrics. The dry cleaner knows best how to preserve the form and structure of the dirndl.

Cleaning in the Washing Machine
If you prefer to clean the dirndl on your own and don’t like leaving the house after the festival, you can trust your washing machine. It can also get the dirndl clean again. Just follow a few steps:
What to Consider in Advance
- First, be sure to remove all accessories attached to the dirndl.
- Have a laundry bag ready and turn the dirndl inside out before washing.
- Dirndl, dirndl apron, and dirndl blouse should always be washed separately.
Program and Temperature
Once all preparations are made, it’s time for the washing machine: The dirndl should be cleaned on a gentle cycle. If your washing machine offers a “hand wash” program, it’s worth selecting it now. The wash cycle should not exceed 30 degrees Celsius, and the spin speed should be set as low as possible. Better to wash the dirndl with caution than regret.
Use the Right Detergent
When washing the dirndl, avoid using fabric softener to prevent compromising its shape and firmness. If the dirndl is a solid color, you can use a suitable detergent to make the color shine. Otherwise, a regular liquid detergent is suitable for this wash cycle.
Cleaning the Dirndl by Hand Wash
More labor-intensive but definitely gentler on the dirndl and its accessories is cleaning it by hand. Simply fill a sink or bathtub with water and detergent and soak the dirndl for a few hours. Afterwards, rinse the garment and hang it up to dry.

Removing Stubborn Stains from the Dirndl
Even if these measures remove the coarse and “simple” dirt, some stains are more stubborn. To remove them, you can use a stain remover. Apply it directly to the stain before putting the dirndl in the washing machine.
How to Dry the Dirndl After Washing
Do not put the dirndl in the dryer, as it could ruin the shape or damage the material. It’s best to hang the dirndl on a hanger to dry in the fresh air. Now the traditional dress is ready for next year!
