Almost everyone has done this at home: A freshly washed bottle is placed upside down on a towel or rack to dry. But that’s where the problem lies: The opening usually rests almost entirely on the surface. As a result, little air can get inside, and the remaining moisture evaporates very slowly.
Especially with sports bottles, glass bottles, or carafes, it stays damp inside for hours. This is not only unpleasant but can also cause hygiene issues. If moisture remains in the bottle for a long time, mold and microorganisms can multiply more easily. Besides unpleasant odors, there are also health risks.

The Wooden Spoon Trick Creates More Air Inside
The solution is surprisingly simple. Instead of placing the bottle upside down on a rack, stand it upright. Then comes the crucial trick: Insert a clean, dry wooden spoon with the long handle first into the bottle.
This creates a small air channel through which moisture can escape more easily. At the same time, air can circulate inside, allowing the bottle to dry faster.
How the Trick Works
First, thoroughly rinse the bottle and pour out the remaining water. Then take a dry wooden cooking spoon with a sufficiently long handle and place it in the bottle. The vessel should then be left standing until the moisture is gone.
Depending on the size and shape of the bottle, the drying process can be significantly faster than simply placing it upside down.

What to Watch Out For
Not every wooden spoon is equally suitable for the trick. It’s important that it is clean and completely dry, as it will come into contact with vessels from which you will later drink. Also, the spoon handle should not be too thick. The bottle opening must not be completely sealed. A small gap must remain so that the moist air can escape.
After use, the wooden spoon itself should also be allowed to dry well before being used again.
Moisture Can Promote Mold
Even if a bottle appears clean on the outside, remaining moisture inside can become problematic. Especially with vessels that are immediately closed or placed in the cupboard after washing, conditions can arise that promote mold growth. Therefore, it is advised to let bottles dry completely after cleaning and ensure adequate air circulation.
As an alternative to the wooden spoon trick, Elke Messerschmidt from the Competence Center for Home Economics recommends placing the bottle upside down in a dish rack or on a bottle holder after rinsing. It’s important that air can still enter the opening, otherwise, there is a risk of mold.
