Lipstick, day cream, perfume & co. are usually stored in the bathroom—often at high temperatures. But should some products be stored in the refrigerator for a longer shelf life? Find out here which beauty products should be kept in the fridge and which should not.
The Right Storage for Every Product
Skincare – Creams, Serums, and Gels
Skincare products should be stored cool and protected from direct sunlight. This helps active ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, or acids last longer. Especially for natural cosmetics, which have a high water content and largely avoid preservatives, cool storage is recommended. Otherwise, germs can spread quickly in the heat. These beauty products can certainly be stored in the refrigerator—but an opaque plastic or metal box in a shady spot will also do. The only advantage of storing them in the fridge: creams, serums, and co. feel particularly refreshing on a hot day.
Perfume
To preserve the scent of perfume as long as possible, it should definitely be stored cool—but not in the refrigerator, which is usually too cold. The ideal place for storing perfume is the closet, where perfumes are not only protected from direct sunlight but also in a dry and dark environment. These are two factors crucial for preserving the scent.
Mascara and Lipstick
Lipsticks and mascara should indeed be stored cool and protected from direct sun and heat, but the refrigerator is not the ideal place for them. The cold can affect the consistency, making lipstick brittle and changing its color, and causing mascara to clump. Instead of storing beauty products in the fridge, it’s better to keep them in an opaque plastic or metal box in a shady spot.
Nail Polish
Nail polish should be stored cool and shady, but definitely not in the refrigerator. At very cool temperatures, it changes its consistency and becomes viscous. The ideal place for storage is a spot in the closet.
Blush and Eyeshadow
Products that are dry are absolutely low-maintenance; high temperatures don’t affect them. Only hot steam (from showering) is not ideal. Therefore, it’s best to store blush and eyeshadow in a box or a closed cosmetic bag.
Is a Mini Fridge for the Bathroom Necessary?
Almost all beauty products should be stored in the dark and away from any heat sources. However, the mini fridges currently popular on Instagram are not necessary for this. The ideal storage is a dedicated drawer or a compartment in the bathroom cabinet to keep beauty products as long-lasting as possible.
