Freshly washed laundry that smells pleasant and feels wonderfully soft: For many, fabric softener is a staple in their laundry routine. However, not every garment benefits from the added care. In fact, fabric softener can have undesirable effects on some textiles and impair their function. myHOMEBOOK spoke with an expert about this.

Caution with Textiles Featuring Membrane Technology

Modern outdoor and functional materials deserve special attention. Many rain jackets, hiking jackets, or technical sports textiles feature what is known as membrane technology. This ensures that the clothing remains both water- and windproof while also being breathable. This very property can be compromised by the use of fabric softener: “The special ingredients in fabric softeners (cationic surfactants) can penetrate this membrane, seal it, and thus impair the membrane’s functionality,” explains Thorsten Kessler from the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association upon request from myHOMEBOOK.

Therefore, the recommendation for functional textiles is to avoid fabric softener. If it happens that such a garment is washed with fabric softener, there is no need to despair. The surfactants can usually be removed with another wash using an appropriate detergent.

It Depends on the Material

The myth persists around sportswear that fabric softener is generally forbidden. In reality, it depends on the material. If the sportswear contains a membrane or special functional coatings, fabric softener should be avoided.

For classic sportswear made from synthetic fibers, the situation is more nuanced. Here, fabric softener can even offer benefits by reducing static electricity—especially when the clothing is subsequently placed in the dryer. Therefore, the care instructions from the manufacturer are always crucial. Checking the label helps prevent mistakes and extends the lifespan of the clothing.

The Towel Debate

Who doesn’t love fluffy towels? However, this is where a small conflict arises. Fabric softener coats the fibers like a fine film, providing the popular soft feel. At the same time, this effect can slightly slow down water absorption.

This doesn’t mean that towels must always be washed without fabric softener. However, those who place particular value on maximum absorbency should use it sparingly or occasionally skip it. For those who primarily appreciate the comfort factor, fabric softener remains an option.

Does Fabric Softener Protect Clothing?

While potential disadvantages are often discussed, fabric softener does have positive properties. “The cationic surfactants adhere to the fibers of the textiles, protect the fibers from wear by reducing friction, and thus contribute to the preservation of the textiles,” says Kessler. Those who want to use their favorite pieces for as long as possible may even benefit from moderate use.

Can Fabric Softener Damage Washing Machines?

There is a recurring concern that fabric softener could damage washing machines. Kessler reassures: With correct dosing, damage to the machine is not expected. It is different with incorrect dosing: “Continuous overdosing of fabric softeners and detergents, however, promotes the formation of so-called biofilms in the washing machine.” These can lead to unpleasant odors, among other things. For a hygienic washing machine, the expert recommends running a wash cycle at 60 degrees with a full or universal detergent in powder form at least once a month. The detergent drawer should also be cleaned regularly.
