Anyone who has ever tried to measure rooms precisely with a folding ruler knows the effort involved. But a modern alternative promises quick and precise results. Laser distance meters have long been available at hardware stores and significantly ease many tasks. But which model is the right one? And what really matters when buying?
Precise Measurements in Seconds
Whether renovating, assembling furniture, or planning the interior, laser distance meters save DIY enthusiasts a lot of work. They measure distances within seconds and provide millimeter-accurate results.
Before purchasing, it should be clear what the device will primarily be used for. The required range is crucial, as emphasized by TÜV Süd.
Choosing the Right Range
For typical indoor applications, devices with a measuring range between 20 and 40 meters are usually sufficient. It’s different for outdoor use, such as in the garden, on house facades, or construction sites. Here, a model with a range of 60 to 100 meters is recommended.
However, it’s important to note that manufacturers’ specifications usually refer to optimal conditions. Factors like strong sunlight or dark surfaces can reduce the actual measuring distance. This should be considered when making a purchase decision.
Robust Housing for Outdoor Use
Those who want to use the device outdoors should look for a sturdy design. Shock-resistant housing and protection against dust and splashes are crucial here. TÜV Süd recommends at least protection class IP54.
Such devices are considered more durable and provide reliable results even under demanding conditions. For occasional indoor use, a simpler and cheaper model is often sufficient.

Practical Additional Functions Save Time
Many laser distance meters offer additional functions that make everyday work easier. These include calculating areas and volumes or adding and subtracting multiple measurements. This reduces effort and minimizes sources of error, especially for larger projects.
An app connection can also be useful. This allows floor plans to be digitally stored or shared directly with craftsmen, making planning more efficient.
Safety When Handling Laser Devices
Despite their practical advantages, laser distance meters require careful handling. The devices work with visible laser light. For home use, models of laser class 2 are intended, which are considered harmless for short, unintentional eye contact.
Nevertheless, one should avoid looking directly into the laser beam. Also, the beam should never be directed at people or animals. If the laser hits the eye, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) recommends closing the eyes consciously and looking away.
Reflective surfaces like mirrors or metal should also be avoided. Reflections could otherwise inadvertently endanger people further away.
