When painting your apartment, it’s not uncommon for paint to end up where it doesn’t belong—like on the wall. With a simple trick, you can keep the paint bucket clean. myHOMEBOOK editorial director Felix Mildner demonstrates how the trick works on “Easy DIY.”

If you want to paint your apartment, you should work carefully and precisely. Especially when using colorful wall paint, not just white, splashes and marks are immediately noticeable. This starts with wiping the brush on the paint bucket. However, the risk of dripping on the bucket can be minimized with a simple trick.

Simple Trick to Prevent Dripping on the Paint Bucket

When wiping the brush, which is typically used for corners and edges during painting, on the paint bucket, the paint often runs down the outside of the container. Ideally, you’ve placed a painter’s fleece underneath, otherwise the wall paint might end up on the floor. But that doesn’t have to happen! You only need a few items you already have at home to prevent dripping on the paint bucket.

As explained in the video, all you need for the trick is a reasonably sturdy rubber band—or alternatively a strip of painter’s tape, which you should have on hand when painting. Stretch the rubber band around the paint bucket so you can wipe the brush on it. Conveniently, the excess paint drips directly back into the bucket!

In our example, we used a small bucket; for larger containers, a rubber band is less helpful. Here, you can place the tape across the opening to create a simple wiping aid.

More Painting Tips and Tricks

There are several tips and tricks to make painting easier. For instance, you can prevent paint from dripping off the brush—or keep the paint roller from drying out when you want to take a break. And here you can learn how to create clean paint edges on the wall.
