- Bright, indirect light: Orchids need a bright location for photosynthesis. East and west windows are ideal for this.
- High humidity: Many species cultivated in pots are tropical plants. They love high humidity levels of 50 to 70 percent. For this reason, a bathroom—with a window—can be ideal for placing orchids. Winter gardens can also be suitable.
- Consistent, high temperature: The warmth of the location depends heavily on the species. Generally, a temperature between 64 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended. It’s important to avoid large temperature fluctuations.

- Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids): bright location with indirect sunlight, warm year-round between 64 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit
- Cymbidium: can tolerate some sun, needs cooler nights (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit), and can be outdoors in summer
- Dendrobium: can tolerate some sun; temperature requirements can vary depending on the subspecies
- Vanda: very bright location, warm, high humidity
- Cattleya: tolerates direct sun (except at midday), nights can be cooler than days
Locations to Avoid
If your orchid shows signs of distress—such as losing flowers during the growth phase—it may be due to an unsuitable location. If the plant is directly in the blazing sun, especially at midday, it can lead to leaf burns. South-facing windows are not always suitable for orchids for this reason. Only with proper sun protection can you place the plants on the windowsill. However, the location should not be too dark either. With too little light, orchids produce fewer or even no flowers.
