This interior trend is definitely one of the big ones in 2023: colorful niches, door, and window frames. These areas are now being painted in bright colors. myHOMEBOOK introduces the trend.
When it comes to color choices, we’re getting bolder in our homes: While previously only ceilings or walls received a coat of paint, now door and window frames are also getting color. Even small niches or the backs of shelves are being vividly colored. Soft tones are rarely used in this trend—instead, bright colors like yellow, red, blue, or pink dominate. myHOMEBOOK shows how to add colorful accents to your home now.
1. The Door Frame Gets a New Coat
Previously, only the door itself was usually painted, often along with the door frame. Now, the area is more restrained, but the colors are more intense. Only the door frame is painted. This works particularly well in older apartments, where the door frame is often highlighted, possibly with small decorations or patterns.
For those who don’t have an extra decorative strip around their doors to paint, there’s another option: You can simply paint a frame around the door yourself. Even painting the plain door frame creates a beautiful effect and adds colorful accents to the home.

2. Window Frames Become Eye-Catchers Too
Not only door frames are brought to the forefront with bold colors—window frames also serve more than just a functional purpose. Even in a home where color is sparingly used and the concept is more restrained, a colorful window frame can fit well. The same applies as with door frames: This look is particularly beautiful in older apartments but can also be implemented well in other buildings.

3. Highlight the Window Niche with Color
For those who don’t want to paint or highlight their window frames, there are still ways to incorporate color around the window. Windows with wider sills that don’t align flush with the wall are particularly suitable. In this case, you can beautifully paint the area around the window.
4. Shelves with Colorful Back Panels
Another way to add more color accents to your home is by using shelves. It doesn’t matter whether the back of the shelves is open or closed. Simply place the shelf against the wall and paint the back panel or the desired wall in a matching color. For even more color, the shelves themselves can be painted in the same color.
Good to know: Renters might wonder if they are allowed to paint their door frames, for example. Generally, there’s nothing against it, as long as the apartment is returned to its original condition upon moving out. Ideally, you should consult with the landlord beforehand to avoid misunderstandings.
