From the perspective of good design, the coming year promises to be full of contrasts: round table shapes will meet sharp midcentury styles, while a true explosion of color will contrast with dark elegance. The furniture trends for 2024 hold surprising twists—stay tuned!
The furniture trends for 2024 bring a burst of color and lightness back into living spaces. Colorful shelves meet round shapes on delicate legs. That’s right, a touch of midcentury nostalgia even floats through the room here and there. As with every year, new things come, old things remain, but in the end, it all feels cohesive. What defines the furniture trends of 2024? myHOMEBOOK author and interior designer Odett Schumann reveals it to you!
Not Without Colorful Furniture Into the New Year

Admittedly, 2023 was a good precursor for the furniture trends of 2024, especially regarding color. Already this year, people were surprised when colorful shelves suddenly appeared in living rooms. These were not just small wall shelves but substantial bookcases. And they didn’t come in soft pastels; they boldly embraced deeper hues. Models in Marsala, Yves Klein Blue, or vibrant green caught everyone’s attention. This effect is now being adopted by seating furniture for 2024. While it may take some courage to choose a sofa in saffron yellow, rust red, or the new Pantone color Peach Fuzz, it certainly adds a significant amount of charm to a home. However, it’s advisable to keep the surrounding environment—walls, floors, and other furniture—relatively subdued in color to let the colorful piece take center stage.

A Round Affair
Round, round, round are all my furniture: From oval to curved—organic shapes have been defining living spaces for several years. But now, round furniture is set to triumph. Stools, poufs, side tables, and coffee tables can no longer resist the simple form. Sometimes they are made of plain solid wood, sometimes of elegant marble, sometimes they take on a sculptural hourglass shape, and sometimes they consist only of a delicate metal frame. What’s special about round design? The simplicity. Completely uncomplicated and without having to compromise on furnishing, this form fits into any environment. Clearly, a furniture trend for 2024 with great potential!
Delicate Wall Features

Wall shelves are indispensable, but do they have to be eye-catching? There’s another way: New models focus more on restraint. Thin wooden wall shelves, often tapering wedge-shaped in profile and gradually narrowing into the room, are clearly among the furniture trends for 2024. If you need to store more, you can’t go wrong with a delicate string shelf next year. The comeback of this wall shelf icon was already apparent this year, and now it’s a done deal. The simple wall storage system, available in various models and sizes, will be in high demand again next year.
Classics for Cuddling
In the new year, famous lounge chairs are finding their way back into living spaces. Renowned models like the Eames Chair, the Barcelona Chair, the Wassily Chair, or the Egg Chair are considered classics for a reason. So why not literally rely on the tried and true? Although these are rarely originals, they are among the best guarantees for coziness within your own four walls. If you can’t afford a genuine lounge chair, you might find a bargain at an antiquarian, flea market, or in classified ads. But newer lounge chair models also have their charm, as they often draw inspiration from the pioneering designs of furniture history and can easily match in comfort.
Large, Dark Storage Furniture

Admittedly, this furniture trend for 2024 may initially surprise, but it’s certainly worth considering in interior planning. We’re talking about oversized shelf-cabinet combinations that stretch across almost the entire wall space and carry a dark tone. And is that supposed to be cozy? Oh yes, absolutely! Dark furniture pieces of a certain size are often said to appear heavy and ominous. They certainly have a special effect, but what was already well-received in kitchens this year should also work in the rest of the living space. After all, a dark tone like matte black or anthracite looks extremely chic. Increasingly popular will be shelf-cabinet combinations that are individually configurable. Various compartment sizes and a mix of open and closed storage, as truly needed in everyday life, seem to be the future of modern furniture.

The (Partial) Return of Midcentury Style

Let’s be honest, it was never really gone, but for 2024, the popular midcentury style seems to be announcing its return. At least individual facets will soon be seen frequently again. The launch of the first furniture collections for the coming year indicates that new armchairs, sideboards, and side tables will not come without delicate, slanted legs. Instead of the classic round hairpin legs, furniture legs now have an oval or rectangular profile. Additionally, all new seating and cabinet furniture are characterized by a dynamic, angular silhouette, making them a perfect match for the new round table models. Typical of the midcentury style, many furniture frames and bodies will focus on dark cherry, walnut, or mahogany.
