The unique character of the loft style is expressed in its constant contrasts. Anyone who thinks this would break the boundaries of coziness is mistaken. A bedroom in industrial style provides the best proof.
Because the modern industrial style is inspired by the charm of old lofts, dark colors, rugged materials, and used furnishings set the tone in terms of design. At first glance, all this may seem rather unsuitable and downright uncomfortable for a bedroom setup. Yet this urban ambiance holds plenty of potential to transform the space into a cozy oasis. But how? myHOMEBOOK author and interior designer Odett Schumann explains how to furnish your bedroom in industrial style—without having to live in a loft.
1. Don’t Just Opt for Dark Wall Colors
Tendentially, the industrial style calls for darker colors in its implementation. The palette ranges from dark blue and green to anthracite, brown, and even black tones. However, the prerequisite is that the bedroom also has a certain size. In the case of a smaller room, these colors can otherwise feel unpleasantly oppressive.
Alternatively, you can certainly opt for light colors like cream, greige, or light gray. Also, don’t be afraid of bold tones like blue. The cool color excellently balances warm solid wood or dark leather furniture and is also extremely calming.
And those who are lucky enough to live in a home with exposed or brick walls will find that the industrial style naturally makes its way into the bedroom. The warm, matte terracotta tone of exposed masonry harmonizes ideally with gray or green nuances. Variety is created with warm accents like bright yellow, but also with a powder tone like nude.
2. Use Contrasting Material Choices
Typical of the industrial style are its numerous contrasting materials. On one hand, rough and cool meets soft and warm. Furniture made of solid wood, such as wardrobes, dressers, or beds, clearly brings rustic flair. Complementing this are the still popular coat racks made from water pipes, available as standing or floating models.

If storage space is still lacking, it’s best to add original vintage lockers, which are sure to have some flaws or rust spots. Old wine and fruit crates can be used to improvise small shelves on the wall.
Additionally, a chair made of sturdy wire mesh with cognac-colored or dark brown cushions proves to be an interesting combination of hard and soft materials. On top is a cozy fur. A bedside table made of cast concrete adds a cool touch to the room. In front of the bed are high-pile runners, floor-length velvet curtains hang at the window, and a cream-colored macrame adorns the dark wall.

3. No Industrial Bedroom Without DIY
No style combines perfection and imperfection as harmoniously as the industrial style. Here, the look can consist of old, used, and new items. Dents, flaws, and scratches, as well as genuine handmade items, tell stories, and the industrial style makes use of them in the bedroom. The inventory here often consists of DIY products.
Popular is especially the bed made from old pallets. A shelf made of untreated wood is quickly stained with a different color. The old flea market find or a grandpa’s heirloom gets a second life as an upcycling project.
Since a bedroom without an elegant room divider is somewhat incomplete, an antique screen is recommended here. How about an old window with individual panes, for example, covered with newspaper scraps for privacy? Perhaps a prop can be found in a discarded theater or prop collection.

4. Integrate Creative Lighting Ideas

Lighting is a major theme in the industrial style. Primarily, it’s metal pendant lights that bring urban flair into the bedroom. The former paint on the old housing may already be peeling. Newer lamp models in copper, silver, or glass create a cohesive room concept.
Freely hanging light bulbs on brightly colored textile cables still create an iconic effect, which is why they have long been indispensable in loft-like settings. They can also be creatively draped on sturdy branches above the bed, massive mirror frames, or floating pipes from the hardware store. Old scissor lamps are suitable as reading lights next to the bed or for optimal lighting of the makeup area.
5. Mix Vintage and New Decor Objects
To make the bedroom in industrial style a cozy retreat and feel-good place, it needs about a handful of accessories. Here, old and new can mix, but you don’t need much of either.
A tin advertising sign with colorful retro design, oversized vintage letters from an old neon sign, or an aged globe bring just the right dose of trendy nostalgia into the room. New textiles like a chunky knit throw and fluffy pillows on the bed can be combined with them.
A few houseplants in the room skillfully set accents in lush green. Currently popular baskets or decor objects made of natural fiber weave like seagrass, willow, or water hyacinth bring a similarly soft touch.
