Even with little DIY skill, you can enhance dressers and cabinets by outfitting them with new furniture knobs. These handles are available in numerous shapes, colors, and designs in stores. Installation is relatively simple. myHOMEBOOK explains how to do it in the mySKILLS video tutorial.
The difference a few new handles can make on an otherwise dull piece of furniture is astonishing. Whether made of metal, wood, plastic, or even as textile or leather loops, you can now find a wide selection of knobs in hardware and home improvement stores. Sometimes, you might even find them at flea markets. The knobs usually come with a threaded rod and matching nuts. In this example, the drawers on a white dresser without handles were fitted with alabaster knobs for both aesthetic and practical reasons.
Installing Furniture Knobs Yourself–Here’s How
Knobs are usually sold in sets, consisting of handles, threaded rods, and matching nuts and washers. If there are already handles on the dresser or cabinet, you must first unscrew them. The threaded rods can usually be easily inserted into the existing hole. However, if–as in this example–the drawers or cabinet doors do not have pre-installed handles, you must first drill a hole of the appropriate diameter to attach the furniture knobs. Here’s what you need:
- Furniture knobs
- Cordless drill
- Wood drill bit (diameter as large as the threaded rod)
- Wrench

Drill a Hole and Install the Furniture Knob
If no hole is present, you must drill one into the drawer yourself. However, this is essentially the only task–after that, just a few simple steps follow. Here’s how to proceed:
- Measure the drawer, find the center, and mark it.
- Insert the wood drill bit (diameter = threaded rod) into the cordless drill.
- Position it straight and drill a hole through the drawer front.
- Screw the threaded rod of the handle into the hole.
- Attach the washer and nut on the other side.
- Tighten the nut with the wrench.
