Hygge, Lagom, Mys—three popular home trends from the North. Now, “Coorie” from Scotland joins the ranks, focusing on coziness like its predecessors but with a more rustic interior style.
Coorie, pronounced with a true Scottish rolled “R,” means something like cuddling or making oneself cozy. The home trend is not an age-old part of Scottish society but was created a few years ago in a work by author Gabriella Bennett.
What Defines the Home Trend?
The Scottish climate is very unpredictable and particularly harsh in the autumn and winter months. Coorie is about spending time in nature despite the unpleasant weather and then rewarding oneself in a cozy home. After a long walk, a home decorated in the Coorie style should welcome you with a roaring fire in the fireplace, a good glass of whiskey, and comfortable seating.
How to Decorate in the Coorie Style?
Unlike Hygge and Lagom, Coorie does not focus on a playful, bright interior but on a rustic style. Essential are natural materials—especially wood. You need furniture made of solid, dark wood, heavy decorative items like cast-iron pans or massive jugs. However, coziness should not be neglected, with warm wool blankets, cozy cushions, and fluffy sheepskins providing comfort. Color-wise, one should opt for darker tones. Plaid patterns, especially the original Scottish tartan, fit perfectly.
The centerpiece of a Coorie-style home is the dining table. A large, solid wood model where everyone in the household can gather to sit, eat, and chat together. Besides coziness, community is also an important aspect of this home trend.
