Due to the “lockdown light” and cooler autumn temperatures, people are spending more time at home again. If you’re already dreading monotony and boredom, consider tackling some DIY and home projects that you can finally start. How about creating a cozy sitting area in the living room, for example?
When the urge for a good book strikes, most people read on the couch or in bed. However, a small reading nook would be much more exquisite, easily set up in front of an existing bookshelf, in a previously unused niche, or on an unoccupied windowsill.
Setting Up a Reading Nook–What Do You Need?
Suitable Seating
No matter how good the book is, if the seating isn’t comfortable, you won’t last long in the reading nook. Depending on available space and personal taste, there are various upholstered furniture options that are suitable for creating a cozy reading corner.
- Lounge chair
- Bean bag or pouf
- Rocking chair
- Chaise longue
- Ottoman
- Small sofa
- Hammock or hanging chair
If space is limited, a simple wooden chair can suffice for setting up the reading nook. The key is to use the right textiles to make it as cozy and inviting as possible.
Decor for Added Coziness
Cozy vibes are primarily achieved with cushions, throws, and furs on the seating. A small rug not only creates a snug atmosphere but is especially useful in reading nooks with chairs to keep your feet warm.
A small side table can hold not only the current book during a reading break but also a teacup or a glass of red wine. Depending on the available space, larger coffee table models or narrow tables that are taller may be suitable. Those with metal legs look particularly delicate but may not fit all decor styles.
If there’s a bit more space available, you can integrate a large floor vase or several small plant containers into the reading nook. They complete the overall look.
Furniture for Storing Books
If you can set up your reading nook right next to your bookshelves, you don’t need to worry about this aspect. Everyone else should consider how they want to store and display their books. Are there many volumes that are best sorted into a freestanding, small shelf? Or is a magazine rack enough to use as a book holder? Alternatively, the side table might suffice to place one or two works. An even simpler and more straightforward option is to stack the books on the floor. However, this can quickly look chaotic and may not suit every decor style.
The Optimal Lighting
To fully immerse yourself in your books, all you need is the right lighting in the reading nook. A reading lamp can be integrated as either a floor lamp or a small table lamp. Additional candles create a cozy atmosphere and make the reading chair even snugger.

Setting Up a Reading Nook on the Balcony, Sunroom, or Terrace
You can, of course, set up the reading nook on the balcony, terrace, or in the sunroom. It’s important to use outdoor furniture and textiles, especially for unprotected balconies and terraces, and to ensure the lighting is suitable for weather conditions.
