From the Closet to the Couch: Thanks to Chanel, bouclé is a familiar term to many, as the renowned fashion company’s famous suits are made from this soft wool fabric. For those who aren’t fans of suits, the material can now be brought into the home through upholstered furniture.
A brief excursion into the fashion world: In February 1954, Coco Chanel introduced the classic Chanel suit at the opening of her fashion salon in Paris. The two-piece suit with a simple, straight cut was made of mottled tweed, wool jersey, or bouclé. To this day, these characteristic features of the Chanel suit have remained unchanged despite shifting color and pattern trends. And now, trend-conscious individuals can bring a piece of Chanel into their homes with upholstery covers. The color combination is not crucial: natural tones, colorful mixes, or dark colors–everything is allowed and in trend, as long as it’s bouclé.

What is bouclé made of?
Bouclé is a coarsely textured fabric primarily made from effect yarn or hair yarn. This yarn already has loops, knots, and varying thicknesses, which create the fabric’s irregular and typical look. Because it is particularly thick and fluffy, jackets and coats are often made from it. In the past, carpets were also frequently spun from this fabric.

How do you care for the fabric?
Bouclé is durable and relatively resistant. However, since the fabric can consist of different types of yarn, there are no universally applicable care instructions. It is advisable to avoid chemical cleaning agents. If a stain appears on the cover, it should be treated gently and only with water. You don’t need to worry about the fabric’s condition–due to its characteristic surface structure, “wear and tear,” as seen over time with other fabrics, is not noticeable.
