Box spring beds often impress at first glance with their almost regal appearance. Here’s everything you need to know before buying one.
The large upholstered beds look incredibly comfortable and luxurious–it’s no wonder they’re gaining popularity here in Germany. But what are the real pros and cons of box spring beds compared to other beds? And what should you consider when buying one?
Overview
What distinguishes a box spring bed?
When searching for a new bed, it’s hard to avoid the “box spring question.” But what sets this American-style bed apart from traditional beds?
- Primarily, it’s the unique construction with multiple layers of spring mattresses. These support the natural sleeping position, providing maximum relaxation.
- A box spring bed doesn’t have a slatted frame but consists of a base box with two fabric-covered mattresses and a topper on top. This connects the top two mattresses, creating a large sleeping surface.
- Additionally, box spring beds have a padded headboard, giving them their distinctive look.
- Due to the multi-layered construction, box spring beds can be up to 80 cm high, making them significantly taller than regular beds. This makes getting up easier, so box spring beds are also recommended for older people.

How comfortable are box spring beds?
Sleeping like on clouds and waking up refreshed in the morning–that’s what consumers expect from buying a box spring bed. Indeed, box spring beds are designed to enhance lying comfort and thus sleep quality. The legendary “box spring feeling” is provided by the base with two mattresses and a topper. This allows the bed to respond individually to body movements and adapt to the body’s shape.
So if you’re a fan of a yielding mattress, a box spring bed is just right for you. If mattresses and toppers are optimally coordinated, they can even help with back problems and resulting headaches. However, a personal needs analysis is important, considering both your own body weight and that of your partner, as well as your preference regarding mattress firmness.
Important: The lower the firmness of a mattress, the quicker it will sag and become uncomfortable. However, this doesn’t mean the mattress should be bought too firm from the start–it’s more about finding the right balance!

What makes a good box spring bed?
The options for a box spring bed are extremely versatile, as there are now numerous models on the market. Naturally, it’s difficult to keep track and decide on the right model. It’s important to pay attention to high-quality materials and good craftsmanship.
A high-quality box spring bed should have both a base box and innerspring mattresses. Although all box spring beds boast a luxurious appearance, not every piece of furniture delivers what it promises. Therefore, it’s crucial to focus on the quality of the furniture before purchasing and, if in doubt, seek advice from a trusted furniture dealer.
Proper care of the box spring bed
As with almost all items, the better the care, the longer the lifespan of a box spring bed. Regular cleaning is recommended not only for hygiene reasons. At least once a month, the fabric cover of the box spring bed should be vacuumed. Most vacuum cleaners have a special upholstery nozzle that cleans reliably and gently.
If the topper cover is removable, it should also be washed regularly. The cover is usually machine washable, but it should not be washed at more than 60 degrees, as the fabric may lose its shape and no longer fit the topper properly.
Properly airing mattresses extends their lifespan
During sleep, moisture naturally accumulates in the room overnight, which can inadvertently settle in the mattress layers. Although the mattresses are ventilated from below and above, the intermediate layers may eventually start to mold, which should be avoided at all costs. With a little know-how, this is not a problem, as daily ventilation of the room effectively prevents this effect.
Nevertheless, mattresses and toppers should ideally be turned every four weeks to allow the air between the layers to fully exchange. This is not only much more hygienic but also leads to even wear and thus longer durability of the mattresses.

What does a good box spring bed cost?
Box spring beds are considered more expensive than regular beds–however, it’s important to note that all parts are included in the purchase price. With regular beds, the cost of mattresses and slatted frames is often added. Considering the level of comfort in box spring beds and regular beds, there’s hardly any price difference at the same quality level.
Still, if you’re looking for a bargain, a box spring bed might not be the best choice, as high-quality and durable models quickly exceed 2,000 euros. However, box spring beds are also available at significantly lower prices. Affordable models with a shorter lifespan are available from 300 euros.
