After colorful room ceilings, vibrant staircases are now making their debut. No longer just a means to an end, staircases are becoming true eye-catchers in interior design.
Interior enthusiasts put a lot of love into their decor. Every room is lovingly furnished, and every detail must be just right. A splash of color on the wall can stylishly enhance the room’s atmosphere. However, one part is often neglected, as if it doesn’t belong to the rest of the home: the staircase. But that’s changing now. Instead of merely serving to get you from one floor to another, the staircase is now getting our full attention and becoming colorful.
Steps with Style
Staircases have the sole purpose of getting us up and down in the house. But while the structure was once purely practical, it has now become part of the overall decor. It’s no longer just any staircase with steps being installed–no, care is taken to ensure it matches the rest of the style.
And now the staircase is also becoming colorful–turning into a real eye-catcher in the stairwell. Now, the focus is not on the material but on the color.

Painting Stair Steps–What to Consider
Since stair steps are frequently walked on and used, you should use a suitable paint. Ideally, the paint is appropriate for floors or stairs. If it’s a wooden staircase, proceed as follows:
- sand off old paint, repair scratches and other blemishes
- clean the steps to prepare them optimally for painting
- apply a primer, preferably an adhesive or blocking primer for good durability
- paint the staircase in any color, usually requiring several coats
- seal the paint to protect the steps and the color

Seamless Colorful Stairs
Currently, stairs that aren’t traditionally made of wood are particularly popular. Often, cast concrete is used instead. This makes the steps appear almost seamless–and if they have a striking color, the whole thing looks almost futuristic. If you then choose an adjacent shelf in the same color, you’ve created a unit that’s a real eye-catcher.

Alternatives to Painting
If you don’t want to paint your staircase directly but still want to give it a new look, you can opt for an alternative: carpet. What many still associate with old, dusty carpet mats is now available in chic and modern styles. And with small carpet pieces on the steps, you bring color into your home.
Alternatively, but more labor-intensive, you can also lay tiles on the stair steps. It looks particularly nice if the tiles transition directly into the floor. Here, too, you can choose special colors or patterns to make the staircase a focal point.
