Just relax and let your mind wander—a hanging chair makes it easy. Find out why this piece of furniture is currently back in style here.
If you enjoyed swinging as a child, you’ll likely still enjoy it as an adult. Since we usually don’t set up a swing in our apartment or on the balcony, there’s a wonderful alternative: the hanging chair. Unlike the classic porch swing—which is also experiencing a revival—the hanging chair is typically designed for one person and features a much more modern design. The hanging chair was once popular, but it has since adapted to the times and become more practical.
A Little Vacation for the Home
The hanging chair brings a touch of vacation feeling to your home. The gentle swinging and relaxing feel more like a small getaway than everyday home life. It’s even better that you can easily bring this feeling into your own four walls.
The hanging chair works particularly well in a reading nook or by a window with a nice view. In summer, pair it with light cushions; in winter, with thick blankets.
Unlike perhaps the porch swing or a hammock, the hanging chair is suitable for both indoors and outdoors. It also has another advantage: It’s relatively compact, so you could even place it on the balcony.

The Small Revival of the Hanging Chair
The hanging chair was once popular. However, it could only be attached to the ceiling. While this initially seems practical because you can hang it without a large frame (like with a porch swing), it’s actually quite complicated. Several things need to be right. The ceiling must support the chair and the person sitting in it—as must the hook. And the hook must first be securely installed in the ceiling. Let’s be honest: There was always a bit of fear about whether that small hook would actually hold.
Today’s hanging chair comes with a frame to which the basket is attached. While there are still weight limits, the concern that everything might collapse is significantly reduced.
And the frame offers another advantage: The hanging chair no longer needs to be placed under a ceiling. This opens up new possibilities outdoors, as you can easily place the basket in the middle of the garden or on the rooftop terrace. Additionally, you now sit relatively comfortably in a basket rather than somewhat awkwardly in a hammock-like cloth.
