Burnt food, cigarette smoke, or stale air–sometimes our homes smell quite unpleasant. When airing out doesn’t help to banish the bad odors from our home, a fresh scent is often just a few sprays away. myHOMEBOOK shows how to easily make sustainable room spray yourself.
Room sprays are true magic potions. With a press of the spray nozzle, they transform cooking odors into “April Fresh” and the smell of wet dog fur into “Summer Breeze.” However, as appealing as the names of room sprays sound to our ears, the “Morning Dew” is often taxing for our noses. It’s no surprise that the artificial “Sea Breeze” reliably gives us headaches. The alternative to chemical room sprays from the drugstore is homemade room spray. Not only is it easy to mix yourself, but the DIY room spray is also free from chemical aerosols and other questionable additives. Moreover, the essential oils used can have a calming and relaxing or stimulating, mood-enhancing effect on our well-being.
Make Your Own Room Spray–What Do You Need?
If you want to ensure a fresh scent in your home, you can mix room spray yourself with just three ingredients:
Materials
- Empty spray bottle
- 400 ml distilled water
- 100 ml vodka (don’t worry: you won’t smell the alcohol later. It’s important to neutralize the scent molecules and make the room spray last longer.)
- Aroma oil (e.g., lavender oil, tea tree oil, etc.)
- Funnel

The DIY Instructions
In just a few moments, you can easily and quickly mix 500 ml of sustainable room spray yourself:
- Fill the vodka and about 15 drops of essential oil into a spray bottle.
- Then fill the mixture with distilled water.
- Now gently swirl the mixture to ensure the ingredients mix well.
Tip: If you like, you can experiment with different essential oils to your heart’s content.
Instead of essential oils, you can also mix room spray with fresh orange or lemon slices or fragrant rose petals. For example, if you choose a rose scent, pour vodka over fresh fragrant rose petals. The mixture should be sealed airtight and left to steep in a bright place for 14 days. Afterward, the mixture can be strained and topped off with distilled water.
