Seed paper is always a good idea for plant enthusiasts. It’s simple and quick to make, and it makes a wonderful gift. A big advantage is that it costs almost nothing and is also sustainable.

Whether as a party favor or a nice little Easter surprise, seed paper is not only a beautiful and homemade gift idea but also good for the environment. myHOMEBOOK editor Franka Kruse-gering explains in a few steps how to make seed paper yourself.

What Exactly Is Seed Paper?

Seed paper, as the name suggests, is paper that contains seeds in or on it. The advantage is that you can simply place the paper as it is into a pot with soil. You just need to cover it slightly with soil, water it–and soon the flowers can sprout.

What You Need for DIY Seed Paper

To make seed paper, you only need a few tools.

  • Old egg cartons, alternatively cardboard or newspaper
  • Container for mixing
  • Blender
  • Water
  • Cookie cutters
  • Seeds

How to Make Seed Paper – Instructions

  1. First, tear the egg carton into many small pieces and place them in a container.
  2. Press the individual pieces firmly to the bottom of the container.
  3. In the next step, add some water to the pressed cardboard. Just enough so that only a little water remains on top. Let the mixture sit for at least two hours so the cardboard can absorb the water.
  4. Next, puree the mixture with an immersion blender. If it turns out that too little water was used, feel free to add a bit more. The consistency should be homogeneous and not watery.
  5. In the next step, fill the cardboard mixture into the lying cookie cutters and press it down. The thickness should not exceed the height of the cutter.
  6. Finally, you can spread the seeds over the mass.

After about two days, depending on the thickness of the filled mass, the seed paper should be completely dry and can be removed from the molds.
