Don’t throw away an old hose! With a few zip ties, you can craft a basket that’s more stylish than you think. The instructions are in the video.
Bent, torn, chewed. There are many reasons a garden hose might give out. But even if it’s no longer usable for its original purpose, you can still craft something beautiful from a used garden hose—like a basket. myHOMEBOOK explains how to do it.
For the DIY basket from a garden hose, you will need:
- an old garden hose (about 25 meters long)
- Long zip ties in the color of your choice
- pliers
Step 1: Bend the garden hose
Bend a small section of the hose back after about 15 centimeters and secure it with a zip tie.
Tip: Insert the zip ties so that all closures face the same direction.

Step 2: Coil like a snail shell
Repeat this step and coil the garden hose like a snail shell in increasingly larger loops. After each bend, connect the two hose sections that are closest together again with a zip tie. Continue this process until the base reaches your desired diameter.
Step 3: Build upwards
Now coil the hose layers further, but slightly offset, upwards. Once you’ve reached the desired height, leave a part of the hose loose—this will form loops on both sides. Finally, wrap the hose around one more time, securing it every few centimeters with zip ties. You can then cut off the excess hose and trim the zip ties. And just like that, the DIY basket from a garden hose is complete, ready for anyone to craft before tossing the hose in the trash.
