Bird enthusiasts likely have a birdbath in their garden. But what do you do if you want to go on vacation and can’t refill the bath?
For birds, a birdbath is a wonderful support. And we can watch the birds bathe and drink while relaxing. However, it can be quite a hassle to constantly think about refilling it. myHOMEBOOK editor Franka Kruse-Gering shows how to build a self-watering birdbath.
What is a Birdbath?
A birdbath, as the name suggests, is a bath for birds. Especially in summer, we can support the birds in the garden or on the balcony this way. They have water to drink and possibly to bathe in.

How to Build a Self-Watering Birdbath
- First, fill the birdbath with water up to just below the rim. This is important as it determines the height at which we need to cut the bottle.
- Next, make a small cut at the bottom part of the bottle with the utility knife. It’s important to make the cut below the waterline so that the birdbath functions as self-filling.
- Then, place the bottle back onto the birdbath.
- Once the cut is made, you’ll see that water flows out of the bottle, but only until the cut is covered with water.
- Once enough water has flowed out of the bottle and the cut is covered with water, the water level will remain stable until the cut is again above the waterline.
