Water can provide cooling, relaxation, and fun in the garden. However, it also attracts animals and insects, which can sometimes be dangerous for them. Learn about protective measures here.
While we refresh ourselves in pools and paddling pools during the summer, these water sources can become dangerous traps for animals. Wild animals, insects, or even cats and dogs often seek out water at night or on hot days. Initially, this isn’t a problem. However, if they try to drink from the paddling pool, they might accidentally fall in. But there are ways to protect animals in the garden from drowning in the water.

Water Sources Become a Danger
The problem arises when there is no way for animals to exit the pool or paddling pool. Then there’s a risk of drowning because they can’t free themselves from the water. But not only large water bodies can be problematic–even full watering cans or rain barrels are potentially dangerous.
“It often happens that cats, hedgehogs, or squirrels drown in pools, paddling pools, or rain barrels,” says Lisa Kainz from the animal protection organization Peta. The animals slip on the smooth walls and can’t get out on their own.

Ramps, Covers, and More
There are quite simple ways to protect animals in the garden from water or help them in an emergency. Wide ramps made of wood or rough plastic are useful. These make it easier for dogs, cats, or even wild animals like hedgehogs to leave the water basin on their own. It is also recommended to cover pools and paddling pools at night. A lid is also sensible for rain barrels.
Smaller drinking spots, such as for birds, insects, or hedgehogs, should be as shallow as possible and equipped with stones that protrude from the water. They can then serve as small rescue islands. Branches, leaves, and small corks can also help insects free themselves from larger containers.
Besides the risk of drowning, there is another danger. Substances like chlorine, algaecides, or pH regulators in the water irritate eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. If animals drink pool water, it can lead to poisoning. Therefore, it is recommended to use fewer chemicals or replace them with natural alternatives.
Water Trough for Refreshment
Water sources are not only dangerous but also useful, especially in summer, as a good way to provide refreshment for birds. What sounds so simple isn’t always the case. Sometimes the animals don’t accept the trough. You can read about why this might be in this article about mistakes when setting up a birdbath in the garden.
