February can be quite unpredictable with its changeable weather. One day, there is snow, and a week later, the temperatures can be in the double digits. So that the gardening work doesn’t pile up when it gets spring-like again, you can take care of the lawn now.
Just because it’s February and the temperatures are still cool on some days, amateur gardeners can’t just put their feet up. Despite lawn care in January, there are still important tasks to be carried out in February. myHOMEBOOK asked Dr. Harald Nonn, Chairman of the German Lawn Society, what care the lawn needs in February.
Mowing
Depending on the weather, the lawn can be mowed for the first or even second time in February. An average height of around three and a half centimeters is important, explains Dr. Nonn.
You can also carry out some cosmetic work, explains the expert: “You can check whether the lawn edges are clean. If not, I would trim the lawn edges in a day or half-day operation.”
Fertilizing
Fertilization in February varies from region to region. In relatively warm areas, for example, in wine-growing regions, where vegetation may already be starting at the end of February, you can think about fertilizing for the first time, explains the expert. “As a rule, however, it is time to fertilize when the forsythia starts to gradually form flowers,” says Nonn. “But I also see it on the lawn: If it’s growing and you could mow it, then it needs nutrients. Then it can support the spring growth.” A nitrogen-rich fertilizer is important for the first fertilization of the year, explains the lawn professional.
Scarifying
You shouldn’t scarify the lawn in February, says Nonn. “You’re not doing the lawn any favors if you scarify too early.” This would create holes in the lawn that either don’t grow over properly or weeds spread across them. “It’s usually moss or something else that is difficult to remove from the lawn afterward,” says the professional.
Watering
Watering the lawn is not yet necessary in February.
Reseeding the Lawn
Sowing lawns in February is not recommended for normal domestic lawns. Quite the opposite, explains the expert: “The seeds soak up water and start to germinate. And when it gets cooler again a week later, and temperatures fall below zero degrees, ice crystals can form and damage the seeds.”
