In most households, bed linens are changed regularly. But what about the mattress? Very few people think to clean it regularly. Additionally, many probably don’t even know how to do it properly.
There are various reasons why the mattress should also be cleaned regularly. Hair, skin flakes, and dust accumulate on it. Stains can also occur, such as from sweat. It’s not enough to just change the cover and replace the bedding. The mattress itself also needs to be cleaned.
How Can You Clean Your Mattress?
The easiest way is to clean mattresses with a cover. Simply remove it and wash it according to the care label instructions. Wipe the mattress with a damp cloth.
For mattresses without a cover, it’s best to use baking soda. When using the powder, you have two options:
- Spread it over the entire mattress and let it sit for a few hours. Then, you can easily remove the residue with a vacuum cleaner. The powder should not only neutralize odors but also kill germs.
- Alternatively, a damp cleaning with baking soda is also an option. For this, you need a cloth or sponge, wrung out but still damp, to rub the powder onto the mattress. Then proceed as with the dry method: let it dry and vacuum.

Air Out the Mattress in Winter
To prevent mold from forming in the mattress, you should not only turn it regularly but also air it out in winter. Subzero temperatures and dry air are ideal for placing the mattress on the balcony for a thorough airing. This kills dust mites and dries the fibers.

How Often Should You Clean Your Mattress?
You should repeat the dry cleaning every few months, while the damp cleaning should only be done annually. In addition to one of these cleaning methods, you should also brush the mattress every few months to scrub off hair, flakes, and dust.
Clean Mattress Stains with Home Remedies
Fresh stains should be removed immediately with the appropriate cleaning agent. You can remove dried stains with the following home remedies:
1. Lemon Juice, Lemon Juice Concentrate, or Vinegar
Apply some of one of these solutions to a paper towel and dab the stains with it. Then brush the areas and treat them with water. The whole thing must dry properly before you can put covers back on.
2. A Mix of Baking Powder, White Vinegar, and Dish Soap
Put the three ingredients in similar proportions into a spray bottle and apply the mix to the stains. Then brush the areas vigorously. After that, it just needs to dry–the stains should then be gone.
