In the bedroom, there are several items and areas that are easily overlooked during cleaning. myHOMEBOOK highlights five things that should be cleaned again in the bedroom.
Good hygiene in the bedroom is crucial for health, well-being, and sleep quality. Dust and mites can cause allergies or breathing problems. Additionally, a clean and tidy bedroom has a calming effect. The room should be cleaned at least once a week. When cleaning the bedroom, don’t forget the following things.
1. Bedspread
A bedspread protects the bed from dust and dirt during the day. People often sit on it in street clothes. While the bedding underneath is regularly changed, cleaning the bedspread is often forgotten. It is a real dust magnet. Therefore, depending on use and environment, the cover should be washed every one to two months.
In between, the bedspread should be shaken out and aired to minimize dust and odors. To avoid damaging the cover, follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.
2. Mattress
Often used but forgotten during bedroom cleaning: the mattress. Dust, hair, skin flakes, and sweat accumulate here. If the mattress is not cleaned regularly, expect mites. These creatures can lead to sleepless nights.
For a hygienic bed and restful sleep, vacuum, air, and flip the mattress about every two months. Additionally, using a mattress cleaner can extend the mattress’s lifespan.
3. Wardrobe
The wardrobe is not only hard to miss but also used daily—and yet it is often forgotten during cleaning. Admittedly, it is not the first piece of furniture that comes to mind when thinking about hygiene. Dust accumulates on the tops, in the corners, and even between the clothes. To remove it, use a duster, dust cloth, or vacuum cleaner. The handles should also be disinfected.
To remove bad odors, vinegar can be used. Simply dilute vinegar with water and wipe down the wardrobe with the solution. Let it dry thoroughly afterward.
4. Pillows and Blanket
Many already know that bedding should be changed and washed about every two weeks. But what about pillows and blankets? Sweat, hair, and skin flakes also accumulate here. How often both pillows and blankets should be washed depends on usage and personal circumstances, such as allergies.
It is generally recommended to wash pillows every three to six months. Those with a dust mite allergy should clean pillows about every two months. The blanket should be washed semi-annually. For allergy sufferers, it is advisable to wash the blanket more frequently.
Before washing pillows and blankets, check the care label to see if the products are machine washable. Mild detergents are the best choice for washing. After washing, ensure pillows and blankets are thoroughly dried. Tip: In the dryer, a few tennis balls can prevent clumping.
5. Ceiling Light
A striking ceiling light gives the bedroom a special atmosphere. If the light is high up and intricately designed, cleaning becomes complicated. Nevertheless, dust and cobwebs should be removed once a month.
A thorough cleaning should be done every three to six months. For this, diluted vinegar essence can be used. Delicate materials should only be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner on the lowest setting.

6. Bed Frame and Slatted Base
Both the bed frame and the slatted base contribute not only to the bed’s stability but are also real dust collectors. These two areas are often forgotten during bedroom cleaning. They should be cleaned about every three to six months. The slatted base can be vacuumed and then wiped with a slightly damp cloth.
The bed frame can be made of different materials, requiring various cleaning methods. Wood and metal can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth. Fabrics should be freed from surface dust and dirt using a vacuum cleaner. Stains on upholstery can be removed with vinegar and water. Mix the liquids in a 1:1 ratio and apply by dabbing. Then blot with a dry cloth.
