Ants are considered helpful in the garden. They aerate the soil, spread seeds, and can help maintain the ecological balance. However, if these insects find their way into the house, the joy quickly fades, especially when they swarm toward food or pet feed. Besides chemical solutions, an unusual tip often circulates: Vaseline is said to keep ants away. But does this home remedy really work? myHOMEBOOK explains what’s behind it.

Overview
How Vaseline helps against ants
Ants are organized in colonies. The queen ant is the head of the colony, and all other ants serve her. They spend the entire day expanding and repairing the nest, caring for the brood, and–most importantly–foraging for food. It is during this foraging that the insects may invade our homes.
Even tiny cracks in masonry, cable ducts, or pipes are enough for them to enter. Usually, individual ants scout ahead, and if they find a food source, they leave scent trails for the other ants in the colony. When the other ants detect these scent trails, an ant trail to the food source and back to the nest can quickly form, ensuring the swift transport of food to the colony.
This is where Vaseline can be an effective remedy against ants. Applying a thin layer of Vaseline on the ant trail achieves two things:
- The greasy layer of Vaseline covers the scent trails left by the scouting ants, causing the following ants to lose their orientation.
- The greasy, sticky consistency of Vaseline causes ants to get stuck or struggle to free themselves, prompting them to retreat.
Advantages of Vaseline against ants
- While chemicals like ant sprays or powders are toxic to both humans and animals, Vaseline is completely harmless. Especially in households with children or pets, Vaseline can be a solution.
- Additionally, most people already have Vaseline at home, making it easy to treat a light ant infestation quickly. And for those who don’t have Vaseline, it can be purchased very cheaply almost anywhere.
- Moreover, the application is simple and requires no precautions or other preparatory measures.

Application of Vaseline against ants
To use Vaseline effectively against ants, proper application is key:
- First, locate the entry point of the ants into the house or apartment. This could be, for example, leaky window frames, ventilation slots, or pipes. Use a cotton swab to apply a thin layer of Vaseline directly in front of the entry hole.
- Then, observe: Are ants still entering the living spaces? If so, there might be another entry point.
- Regularly refresh the areas with fresh Vaseline, as it can dry out or become ineffective due to dust after a few days.
When Vaseline alone no longer helps
Vaseline is particularly effective against ants when the infestation is still minor. With a large stream of ants in the house, Vaseline may no longer be sufficient. In such cases, chemical solutions are often the only option. Here are some possibilities:
- Bait stations: Ants are attracted to the appealing scent in a bait station. These stations are either equipped with a sticky film or contain food with a slow-acting poison. This food is transported by the ants to the nest, where the queen also consumes it. Within a few weeks, an entire ant nest can be eradicated.
- Professional pest control: If the infestation is too severe, such as when an entire wall is infested from the inside, only a visit from a pest control professional will help.
Vinegar-water mixture as another home remedy
“Another home remedy besides Vaseline is a mixture of vinegar and water. This can be used to clean an area infested with ants of their scent trails. This way, fewer ants are attracted to follow their colony mates. A combination of cleaning with the vinegar-water mixture and Vaseline can be sufficient to successfully drive ants out of your home, especially in cases of light infestation.”
