Freshly cut grass, freshly brewed coffee, or newly laundered bed linens—there are everyday scents that smell uniquely wonderful. The latter can be preserved longer with a simple life hack.
Without a doubt, making the bed is a chore. But it’s something you have to do. After all, you’ll be rewarded in the evening with a heavenly fresh-smelling bed. To keep the fresh scent of newly made bed linens for a long time, you can use a trick. All you need for a good-smelling bed is baking soda.
How to Keep Your Bed Smelling Fresh for a Long Time
- This step is optional: For an especially fragrant result, you can mix a few drops of essential oil with the baking soda. The powder won’t leave stains. Lavender oil has a calming effect, helping you fall asleep more easily. Eucalyptus is helpful for colds and stuffy noses in winter. Jasmine, on the other hand, is said to have a stress-reducing effect. Depending on the size of the mattress, you’ll need about five packets of baking soda.
- With or without oil: Next, use a sieve to distribute the baking soda over the mattress. It should be left to work for at least an hour. During this time, the white powder can neutralize unpleasant odors.
- After an hour, you can remove the powder with a vacuum cleaner.
- Finally, make the bed as usual.

Despite the baking soda trick for a fresh scent, you should regularly change your bed linens. It’s recommended to do so every one to two weeks. If you’re not inclined to do this, remember that sweat, dead skin cells, hair, and saliva accumulate in the linens. Additionally, you should replace the mattress at least every eight to ten years. The same applies to the bedding. Plus, mites and other microscopic creatures find it comfortable there.
