The History Behind Jeans
Almost everyone has a pair of jeans in their closet. The popular garment made its debut in 1873 and was designed by Jacob Davis. The American tailor had the idea to create pants designed for workers and cowboys. The reason was the cheap cotton pants that quickly tore during physical labor. Jeans were used as overalls, worn over the actual pants. He used copper rivets from horse harnesses to reinforce the quickly tearing pockets. Since Davis had little money to implement his patent, he partnered with Levi Strauss, with whom he eventually shared the patent.

Why Was an Extra Pocket Added?
The small front pocket had a very specific function back then. It was meant to protect small watches from scratches during hard work. Pocket watches were not yet worn as wristwatches at that time, so they were usually equipped with a chain. They didn’t need much space but still had to be quickly accessible. That’s why the two businessmen developed the design of a small front pocket, the “watch pocket.” It is usually on the right side, as most people are right-handed and can reach into the pocket more quickly.
Over time, it became even smaller. Instead of disappearing with the invention of the wristwatch, a new use was found for it.

What to Hide in the Small Front Pocket
Eventually, the front pocket mainly offered an advantage for lighters and so-called “Zippos.” Back then, Zippos had to be stored upright, or else the fuel would leak and make the jeans wet.
Even after the development of lighters, the mini pocket never completely disappeared. Today, it is known as the “coin pocket” and is used for storing coins or shopping tokens. Lighters still fit in, although nowadays there’s hardly any fear of them leaking. As small and inconspicuous as the front pocket may seem, it’s still interesting to know the thought behind details like these.
