Often, it’s simple tricks that have a big impact–especially when it comes to organizing systems. myHOMEBOOK editorial director Felix Mildner shows on “Easy DIY” how to repurpose old jam jars practically and bring order to the workshop.
Old jam jars don’t always have to be thrown in the recycling bin; they can help organize your workshop. Loose screws, dowels, nuts, and other small parts can be stored in the jars. And since the containers are transparent, you can immediately see what’s inside. Convenient!

Build an Organizing System from Old Jam Jars
Basically, all you need are a few old screw-top jars, some screws, and a wooden board. Clean the jars thoroughly beforehand and remove the labels. The following items are needed:
- Cleaned jam jars with lids
- Screws
- Cordless screwdriver
- Possibly a wooden board
Simple Instructions–Step by Step
The process is relatively simple and can be done by even less experienced DIY enthusiasts. Here’s how to proceed step by step:
- Unscrew the lids of the jam jars.
- Use the cordless screwdriver to screw the lids side by side onto the wooden board. It’s easier if you first make holes in the lids with a nail and hammer. Important: Always insert two screws to prevent the lid from turning later.
- Now you can fill the jam jars and screw them into the lids. It’s best to turn the board upside down for this.
- Depending on your preference, you can also label the jars.
More Order with Jam Jars
“Instead of attaching the jars to the board, it might be more practical, depending on the situation, to screw them onto shelves on the wall or directly to the underside of the workbench. This saves space and keeps the necessary small parts always within reach.”
