Whether it’s a weed puller, lawn mower, or garden hose–anyone with a garden occasionally needs to use various tools to keep their beloved oasis “in shape.” Some gardening tasks are more popular than others, which is why certain garden tools are used more frequently.

A garden needs love, care, and a few gardening tools to be properly maintained. In addition to pruning shears, scarifiers, and rakes, there are many others. myHOMEBOOK wanted to know which garden tool is most used by Germans. The survey ran for a month, and about 15,000 myHOMEBOOK readers chose one of the twelve available answers. The result was close, but one garden tool stood out.

The Most Used Garden Tool Is…

The survey showed that most Germans use the garden hose most frequently. For 3,416 people, watering their own garden is particularly important. This accounts for 23 percent of the survey participants.

Closely following the garden hose is a tool many might have expected to be in first place: the lawn mower. Twenty-two percent voted for it. In total, 3,297 people use the lawn mower most often in their garden. In third place, with 15 percent, is another watering solution for the garden. The watering can was chosen by 2,264 survey participants as the most frequently used garden tool.

Why the Garden Hose Is the Most Used Tool Despite Water Shortages

It’s not new that water shortages have been a global issue for years. In Germany and other countries, some regions are already responding with bans on private watering or filling swimming pools. So why, despite these circumstances, does watering take the first and third spots, with a total of 38 percent, among the most used garden tools?

Watering is essential, even during water shortages, says Dr. Harald Nonn, chairman of the German Lawn Society, in response to a myHOMEBOOK inquiry: “Water is the main component of our plants. Without enough water, metabolism breaks down. The various functions (nutrition, climate regulation, CO2 binding, O2 production, dust binding, etc.) are lost. Therefore, it is a must to supply plants with the necessary water during drought.” However, the expert points out that no water should be wasted. Preferably, rainwater, reclaimed, or gray water should be used, and precious drinking water only in emergencies.
