Whether in the garden, on the balcony, or just on the windowsill—vegetables can be grown almost anywhere. Even a few radishes in a flowerpot can be a good start. But which vegetables do hobby gardeners actually plant? myHOMEBOOK wanted to find out and conducted a survey among its readers.
Growing your own vegetables is all the rage–and for a variety of reasons. As a recent survey by myHOMEBOOK shows, factors such as the joy of success, health benefits, cost savings, and even concerns about potential supply shortages play a role. But which vegetables are most commonly found in gardens or pots? Which vegetables are particularly popular for home cultivation? myHOMEBOOK wanted to find out and conducted a survey among its readers over a two-week period in June 2025. A total of 17,648 people participated. The results are both surprising and unsurprising.

These Are the Survey Results
Tomatoes topped the survey with 26 percent. About a quarter of myHOMEBOOK readers prefer to grow the red fruits. Zucchini came in second place. Overall, 15 percent, which corresponds to 1,567 people, voted for the green squash. Cucumbers took third place with a total of 10 percent and 1,818 votes.
Notable Findings from the Results
myHOMEBOOK expected tomatoes to take first place. Tomatoes are an easy-to-care-for vegetable for home cultivation and suitable for beginners. A Statista analysis also confirms the top spot. According to their April 2025 results, Germans consume more tomatoes than any other vegetable. However, the second place surprised us. The editorial team did not expect zucchini to be so popular for home cultivation.

What to Consider When Planting Tomatoes
Even though tomatoes are considered relatively easy to care for, there are a few things to keep in mind. Tomatoes can be quite finicky and rarely forgive care mistakes. Therefore, in addition to the perfect location, it’s important to ensure adequate watering. Don’t forget to prune your tomato plants, and an occasional dose of fertilizer can work wonders.
