With its large, fan-like leaves, the strelitzia has long been one of the most popular houseplants. It brings a touch of tropical flair to your home and, with proper care, shows its best side. However, there are some common care mistakes that can be easily avoided with a few simple steps.
The strelitzia belongs to the family of Strelitziaceae and originally comes from South Africa. It is particularly known for its striking bloom in bright orange and blue tones, reminiscent of the head of an exotic bird, which has earned it the name “bird of paradise flower.” Depending on the species, the flowers vary in color and size.
Overview
1. Mistakes in Location
Since the strelitzia originates from the subtropical coastal regions of South Africa, where a warm and dry climate prevails year-round, it also has certain environmental requirements as a houseplant.
The location should therefore be chosen carefully. It does not thrive in rooms that are too dark. The result is often dull, limp leaves and significantly weaker growth. The bloom can also suffer from a lack of light. Several hours of sunlight per day are essential for the strelitzia. It feels most comfortable in a bright room, ideally near a window on the south or west side.
2. Mistakes in Watering
One of the most common care mistakes with the strelitzia is overwatering. If the plant is given too much water, it can quickly lead to waterlogging, which causes the roots to rot and, in the worst case, the plant to die.
Since strelitzias are accustomed to occasional dry periods in their natural environment, careful attention should be paid to their water needs. Watering should only occur when the top layer of soil is already dry. Especially in the fall and winter, watering can often be reduced to once a week. Instead, the leaves prefer to be regularly misted with low-lime water.

4 Common Mistakes When Fertilizing Calathea
3. Mistakes in Fertilizing
The growth phase of the strelitzia occurs in the summer months between April and August. During this time, the plant has a particularly high nutrient requirement. To provide it with enough energy for healthy growth, it can be supplied with liquid fertilizer during watering once a month starting in April. In the winter months, the strelitzia takes a rest period, during which it does well without additional fertilization.
4. Mistakes in Overwintering
Strelitzias are not winter-hardy, so they should be carefully tended to during the cold months. Even though they generally prefer summer temperatures, the plant needs a cooler phase in winter to rest. Temperatures of 50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal. Drafts or an abrupt change of location should be avoided during this time.
