While many people bring houseplants into their homes to add a touch of green, others miss the colorful splashes. Flowering houseplants are ideal for this.
If the potentially monotonous green of houseplants is too dull for you, opt for plants with flowers. They bring color into your home and provide variety. With proper care, they can even enrich us with colorful blooms all year round. myHOMEBOOK presents eight flowering houseplants.
1. Anthurium
The Anthurium, often known as the flamingo flower, adds color to a room not so much because of its flowers, but rather thanks to its spathes. It usually shines in bright red, but also in white, pink, and magenta.
To enjoy the flamingo flower for a long time, place it in a bright location. However, direct sunlight should be avoided. Yellowing leaves indicate that the plant is getting too much sun. It’s also important to have well-draining soil and consistently moist earth.

2. Orchid
The orchid is the classic among flowering houseplants. They are considered delicate, but with proper care, they are not. A spot away from direct sunlight is important. Too dry air can also harm them. Orchids thrive in a bright, humid bathroom or can be regularly misted with water.
Additionally, orchids should not be watered but rather soaked. Leftover water in the pot can quickly lead to waterlogging and root rot.

3. Guzmania
The Guzmania is a type of bromeliad that brings an exotic touch to your home. Its striking inflorescence appears in intense colors like yellow, red, pink, or orange. However, it may take some time for the bromeliad to show its best side with blooms. It can take up to a year for them to flower.
Otherwise, the bromeliad is one of the easy-care flowering houseplants. It needs a warm and bright location and only requires fertilization every few weeks.

4. African Violet (Saintpaulia ionantha)
Despite what one might think, African violets are not related to violets. The name comes from their flower color in the first cultivars. The plant is very floriferous–its flowers are usually pink, violet, violet-blue, or white. The yellow stamens in the center add another splash of color.
African violets prefer bright but not directly sunny locations. High humidity is also beneficial, but the plant should not be sprayed directly with water.

5. Flaming Katy (Kalanchoe)
Flaming Katy is also among the flowering houseplants. The plant owes its name to its bright red varieties. Many may know Flaming Katy as a small plant often given as a gift in a mini flowerpot, but it can actually grow up to a foot tall.
It is also very easy to care for–it can survive for a long time without water. In summer, it only needs to be watered as needed. The location should be bright but not in direct sunlight.

6. Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis)
With its hibiscus, you can enjoy stunning flowers in colors like yellow, white, orange, pink, magenta, red, or even bicolor.
Hibiscus requires a lot of water and nutrients, making it one of the more demanding plants. However, with the right care, you can enjoy blooms from April to October.

7. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
The peace lily visually resembles classic houseplants the most. This is due to its large, green leaves, which contrast directly with the white spathes. The peace lily is not particularly demanding, but it does not like direct sunlight. This can cause problems with flower formation.
It is generally easy to care for, but it doesn’t like direct sunlight. High humidity is beneficial, but the plant should not be sprayed directly with water. Every two weeks, you can add liquid fertilizer, but don’t overdo it, as the leaves might turn brown.

8. Azalea
The azalea is known for its long-lasting and vibrant blooms. It is related to the rhododendron, which is evident in its flowers.
To ensure azaleas bloom beautifully, they need plenty of water. It’s also recommended to add some fertilizer to the watering can every two weeks to provide the plant with enough nutrients and encourage new buds to form.
