Every now and then, a storm hits. Sometimes more, sometimes less dramatically. Upon inspecting the garden and plants afterward, you find that things didn’t go well for the tomatoes. They are bent or broken. What now?
Whether due to a storm, insufficient support, or just an accident–if a tomato plant is bent or even broken, it’s not ideal. But what do you do if the main stem of the tomato is broken? Can the plant still be saved, or does it need to be discarded?

Is it bad if the tomato plant is broken or bent?
First, it depends on where exactly the plant is broken or bent. If the break is within the top third of the plant, it’s not too concerning. Generally, the plant can heal itself and sprout anew. If the main stem is damaged, the tomato usually sprouts again from the sides.
However, if the tomato plant is broken further down, it’s a bit more serious. Anything is possible, but the chances of success are significantly lower with a break below the first third.
How should you treat the break?
First, the break should be cut cleanly with a sharp knife. A precise cut makes it easier for the plant to sprout again. However, this won’t happen on the main stem; rather, one of the side shoots will take over the role of the main stem. To support the plant, you can tie a side shoot with string or a stick to position it so that it stands upright.

Unlike a broken tomato plant, you don’t need to reach for a knife if it’s bent. You can support it with a splint. Like a broken bone, you tie a piece of wood to stabilize the bent area.

What happens next?
Normally, strong tomatoes need to be regularly pinched out. However, if the tomato plant is in its regeneration phase after being broken or bent, you should wait until it is strong enough again. Pinching out involves removing the side shoots of the tomato so it can focus its energy on the main stem and fruit development. However, pinching out creates small wounds on the tomato. The additional stress of healing should be avoided for now.
What happens to the detached piece of the tomato?
The broken main stem of the tomato plant can be used as a cutting. First, place it in a glass of water for a few days. Ideally, small roots will form, and you can replant it. However, you should remove flowers and leaves so the plant can focus all its energy on developing the cutting.
